hi

can any body help, my horse has been stabled now since 2nd Jan 09 got Laminitis, which am very upset about, but now throw a 2nd xray his has a abscess in his left front hoof, the vet said its a waiting game till the abcesess can be drain, dose any body have any ideas which would help bring the abscess out quicker,

regards

vet came out last week to drain but nothing came out two days later 2nd xrays where taken and it showed a dark spot in the hoof, so the vet said there was an abscess there but will have to wait for it to come out b4 draining, been on internet and it says you can soak foot in warm water and that brings out abcess so then it can be drained, but i dont no if that will cause any problems with the laminitis,

bobs (my horse) is 20 years old and love him to bits am worryed sick about him, hes on meds for pain hes had his heart shoes fitted, the poor boy didnt need this.

regards

tracy

A warm poultice may help to draw the fluid towards sole of foot but if vet has told you to leave it be i'd probably not mess with it i'm sure there is a reason he cannot drain it yet perhaps he cannot get to where it is without damaging nerve endings or something, my mare once got a four inch screw in her foot and vets told me she was incredibly lucky that it missed the nerve endings otherwise there would have been permanent damage (she'd prob have had to be put down : ( ) just follow your vets advice to the letter and if you have doubts consider getting a second vets opinion.

I so, so feel for you, but don't give up! Our beautiful little 22 yr old mare has JUST got over this, and again, like you a long job. Hers too was a nightmare to drain, the vet couldn't help, but the farrier made many visits and a lot of digging (I know this isn't always the best with a lamanitic) but hers was a case of total non weight bearing on this leg... I've never in my life seen a pony so lame. The farrier managed to get to it, but despite poulticing, it still took ages. Here are a few tips I was given, and all are worth a go! Poultice twice daily(Hot) with epsom salts, vet wrap well and duct tape so waterproof. (we found that as our girl is lamanitc too, her feet were very dry and hard, so this helped soften the sole to help draw it out) Eucalpitus oil is a strong and natural disinfectant which is great when it draws. Lucys took well over a month and she is only now coming sound. If I can help in any way I will, I was so upset seeing her like this and its totally different with an oldie with poor feet anyway to that of a horse with normal abcess. Good luck;)

Know the feeling well, my little man had his first lami attack early January, in February suspected abcess, we could only hot tub with epsom salts for 10 days for 2 mins morning and night to see if we could draw anything due to Vet/farrier wanting to ensure foot was stable enough after the lami, got clearance for farrier to locate the abcess and then 5 days of hottubbing and poulticing, then just dry poultice for a further 5 days, farrier then advised to stop and let it be, no packing , last week got his first turnout, he now has muscle weakness in his hind quarters leading to stifle issues, after 5 days of stiff walking out and stretch therapy we are starting to see a breakthrough, his off side was the worst but as the muscle is building he is starting to walk out with purpose and you can see the improvement each day, he has had 2 remedial trims in the past 5 weeks and the farrier is happy now with his feet.
I have to update the Vet again today on the progress with regard to his stifles, we will continue with his therapy and in hand exercises to build his muscle up to support his stifles at the rate he is going bar any more issues suspect he should be back to his usual self by the end of the week. He had a field injury in October, with 3 weeks box rest and then all the box rest over January -February so you can imagine his exuberance now he can get out and move, we have him on restricted but has company in next paddock.

He was a houdini with the Poltices, the first 3 he took off, we then applied a sock, didn't get it off the first night, second day he had pulled at the sock and taken it off and was just starting on the Poultice, so we had to vet wrap round the sock up the leg footballer style to keep it on. we used Animalintex, Vet Wrap and Duct Tape, numerous old socks but got there in the end. We had a TB years ago who had abcess and it took us 5 weeks of Poulticing to sort it out, it came out at the sole and the coronet, there was no coronet breakthough this time.

Just time really, there are no short cuts, depends on the severity and depth of the abcess, I really thought there was no end to it at times but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I'm sorry and know the worry you are going through.
Abscesses can be a positive sign in lami though as the hoof is getting rid of a lot of bad tissue.
I had a pony who came through it all to be sound and useful again, though it's a long haul. Hope your Bob does well too and try not to worry as you are doing your best for him.

thank you for your reply, today bobs feeling more sorry for himself he opened the door from his stable ( as he can do) and away he trotted into his paddock trying to stop a run a way train, i had no chance .. he must have throught free at last.. started running up and down and then rolling it must have been heaven for him, but then very slow walked over to me knowing what he had done :( he was in pain.. he followed me out of paddock and back into his stable, i just stood and cryed for him.. could not beleave what he had done, clean all his feet and then he layed down with a big grown.. ive taken a pic of him but dont no how to upload it.... for a 20 year old hes more like a 5 year old.

When my pony had an abcess I used Epsom Salts in warm water it helped draw the abcess out. I soaked the foot twice a day.

Poor Man and poor you! keep at it, things will improve, have you had his feet checked by the farrier to ensure hes balanced and everything is okay following the lami, drawing with hot tubbing/epsom salts really does work I know ideally it should be for minimum 10minutes but as ours had the lami issue we couldn't and I am sure that slowed the whole draining process down, we couldn't give Bute for the pain as it slows the process, I put our little man on NavilamO which is based on No Bute and Hawthorne and that helped him , if you feel he needs some help then speak with your Vet and get his advice , ours was really helpful and supportive and I was able to ring at any time .......

I hop you and Bob are feeling better today, Porhsa got a thorn in ger frog last week, farrier removed, and then She was lame a few days later, Called the vet, it would of turned into an abcess, He cleared away more frog, to release infection, I was told to hot poultice and tub in epsom salts twice daily, Porsha wont stand in a rubber dish so I syringe the epsom salts into hole, and vet coming tonight to check on her, I vet wrapped but that came of,I have taped and used a sock, came off, nappies came of, so resulted in hot animalntex, with sock over and then a hoof boot, but today I have dry animalintex, and two socks as her hoof doesnt look like it normally does with being wrapped up all day.

I am sure BOB will be better soon:)

hi thanks again for your wishers and message. bobs is ok today he just wants to go out, and i think its made him worse after he got out of this stable y-day and headed for his paddock for a run around, i have left a message for my farrier on his phone y-day for advise over the epson salts but he has not got not got back to me, everybody else said it would work but with him havin lami i dont no want to do for the best, i worry like mad about him at nite in case his feet are hirting and he can not get up after laying down, jsut want him better hate seeing him like this, and being the age he is, and what makes it worse that hes getting very stiff every time he moves you can hear his bones cracking. with it being warm today i gave him a bed bath well stable bath
got to ring vet tomorrow and let him no how bobs is doing, bobs is on one bute aday for pain which he has in the morin

He'll be getting stiff with being in and loosing condition ,are you walking him out in hand? even a couple of times a day building up the ammount of time will help, assuming the lami has settled and its just the abscess now then it helps with their mindset/mobility and if a little controlled in hand grazing can be incorporated will help perk him up a bit., he will probably look awful at first, I was fed up with the comments/looks but it had to be done. I know they take them off everything other than Hay - have they let you introduce some feed/vits, if not I would have a word with them and ask advice, Do let us know how you get on.....

My little man is improving daily now, managed a full stretch on his poor side this morning and you can see the muscle starting to build up which in turn is helping his mobility, still a little clicky but light at the end of what has been a long tunnel.
