My friend and I have got back into riding, now we've got a bit of time on our hands ~ and both bought fab horses ~

We've both joined riding clubs, and although they are great fun, they are quite competitive, with most riders having ridden from a young age.

We both think it'd be a great idea to have something like a Pony Club for late starters, regular meetings, with information, lecturers, tests etc.

I know that I was very lucky in the YO i had was very knowledgable, and willing to answer all my stupid questions, and now I have another friend who is extremely knowledgable about ODE, which we are hoping to do, and has taught me XC and SJ.

Anyone in South East willing to join a PC for OAP's??!!! :D

I'm just about to join my local riding club. I have however heard that there is now a 'pony club camp' for the more mature rider. Think there was something in last months Horse & Rider or Your Horse about it! x

Hi OP what age are you? The problem I had with pony club is that they base the height you jump on age which is non sensical as it assumes everyone starts early an dthat once you hit 13 you can magically clear 3'6" with ease.
If you are 17 or over a riding club might be fun as in riding clubs you get to pick what grade you compete at. You can also be different grades in different disciplines.

A friend told me teh other day about an organisation called the mounted games assoc which is pony games for adults. I never had heard of this it sounds so much fun. Always wanted a go at games but assumed im too old I thought it was only done in pony club

What a good idea. I also joined the local riding club a few years ago but was put off by how competitive it was and that there were very few adults there.

I guess it depends on the club. Some can be v competitive which is a pity. I am the PR person for ours and we have members ranging from 17 - 60+ :p so it means there is a great mix. We run riding club shows and compete but we also did a few projects such as hosting a show for charity and we have a christmas party each year.
It might be worth having a look round the local clubs. Some, like ours are run in conjunction with an RS so if you have not got your own horses thats ok you can borrow a school horse.

I went to a fun day at a local stables last weekend, and spent much of it gazing longingly at the 8 year olds doing flag races and wishing somebody would let me have a go!

I had no idea before that what goes on at pony club really, but having seen it, i'd LOVE to spend some time just being silly with horses :)

Why does it have to be for late starters, that not fair  I want to join, I'm really jealous every time I leave my daughter at camp, I want to go too.

It would have to be less energetic though, couldn't ride for 4 hours a day anymore. Oh and a good supply of ladders to get on and chairs for a rest and strong coffee and a cig on the hour every hour.

Sounds like a great idea.
I didn't ride as a kid so I missed out on all the fun pony stuff, games etc. Now I work at a riding school and, at the age of 22, am taking part in mounted games on an 11.2 alongside the 8-year-olds :D When I ride ponies I'm just like a big kid!

Lucky you, I would squash it :D

A group of us have just had our very first 'adult' camp tuesday/wednesday of this week.

It was great fun and held at a local XC venue. We stayed in portacabins and had in-house catering and supplied our own wine!

An instructor was there for the Tuesday and got us warmed up in the arena and then gave lessons on the XC course. We then spent Wednesday hacking around the course etc.

We were a mixed bunch of experiences but the camp was planned without having to get out of your comfort zone

We all had 'ghosts' to conquer following accidents etc and ALL of us conquered them to one extent or another due to being in a fun group of ladies who supported each other ! :D:D

Highly recommned it! We are planning to go back for three days next April time. :D

Must get ourselves a name tho.........
