New 2026 Hacking / riding thread

Icy here but we had a nice little potter, she picked her way and I just was led by her until we got away from the ice and ruts. Very chilly but also very pretty compared to the gloom of late. I think I'm slowly getting it back in her head that she hasn't completely retired lol Almost three weeks was the longest we had gone without me pootling on her. It has been so nice and calm this past few days. Hope it carries on but there's not guarantees at this time of year - so just seizing opportunity whenI can.

Finally got her out for a walk. Did two miles and didn't get wet.
Let her stop for a munch so I can show you why I don't tend to ride in the winter 😂
There wasn't a dry bit too brush today

Hydro today spoiled by 2 near misses with the horsebox. I was doing 10mph on the lane near our house, narrow, windy, limited visibility. Lady driver came around blind bend doing around 50 had to jam on the anchors and swerve. Then on main road, there is a stretch of road with chevrons so stay on your side, with a junction joining it. So another twat, 5 cars back, decides to overtake us all - can't see what is coming towards him so he couldn't car comes up from the dip he has to swerve in front of me, gave him a blast on the horn and flashed lights but fuming. Could have bloody killed us.

A very brief pootle today. Lol she let me know she wasn't in the mood by reaching around for a nip as I was grooming her. Someone must be in season. Anyway, tacking up was no bother and she was chilled enough but the ice ruts were bad. She's clever and picks her way carefully though. I didn't labour it as my nose and eyes were streaming and I couldn't feel my fingers. Hopped off, gave her a biccie and a pat and untacked fast - she was dying to roll again. Coat change time and all that. 🐴 :D

Another week of yucky weather!
On Thursday we boxed over to hack with my friend C. We had a nice hack, but it rained the whole time and with the ground so wet we stayed on the roads. Friday was just horrid, but I did get a lot of housework done
Saturday was dry and sunny - Yay! I had a short hack, but again didn't want to go off the roads
Sunday was grey and very wet so no riding for me. I took Harvey out for a hand graze and for some reason he decided that standing in a puddle was the best place to be.

Mine loves to eat the grass that's under water.
I wonder if it's really really tasty.

Farrier visit.
Spring is in the air if the speed of her going up the track was anything to go by 😂
Anyway all super duper with her hooves so she isn't in boots at all inhand.
I might start riding without off road (I need to recall how to ride I think 😂)

Yep spring is in the air! I watched Fuz coming up the field today. Yeah, glad to not be on board or end of the leadrope!

Yes I watched and thought, please stop at the tape. She did and just waits.
They've got space to canter about if they want to

Another little potter about - but you have to love a mare don't you - they really let you know how they are feeling! Today she reached around for a little nip as I was grooming her - she was saying she'd much rather stay in and munch hay thank-you-very-much and then if its all the same meet up with her boyfriend instead of having me on board! Ha. But she's a star once I get on, such a good kind girl. I think she's in season too with the reaching around for me.

Had my first riding injury with AJ yesterday - he took a flying leap into some water through a narrow gateway and nearly took the gatepost out with my leg. There was someone else about so I had to pretend it didn't hurt and after a few minutes it didn't really 😅

Other than that it was a good ride, he made out he was going to be scared at some passing cars but with just a little telling off he was fine with them.

Today I just schooled in the field, but he wasn't really up for it. I'm not used to it being hard work.

Pictures of the little darling .. hard to believe this is the same horse who as a 2 year old only looked at me with his head (and a virtual middle finger) up, and the whites of his eyes showing.
